About me

I grew up in Ireland and came to the U.K. in 1987 to do my Nurse training. After a couple of years in General Nursing I completed my Midwifery training which I enjoy and still work in part time. Leaving home was the first time I thought about foods and it made me realise how good it was to have homemade meals! Time is precious these days, with busy lifestyles and self-care is easily compromised. This fast-paced style of living and processed foods has made home cooking with fresh ingredients less popular. I feel this is contributing to our growing chronic health problems. Although I love the creativity of food and have eaten reasonably well, it was my own health journey that led me to study for a three-year Diploma in Nutrition at The College of Naturopathic Medicine in London. The course deeply increased my knowledge of holistic care as well as nutrition. I want to help you explore the root causes of your health problems and work with you to build your individual diet. Also, I want to give a legacy of understanding the importance of a whole food diet to young people.

I am a member of The British Association for Nutrition and Lifestyle Medicine (BANT) and registered with The Complimentary and Natural Healthcare Council (CNHC).

What is Nutritional Therapy?

Nutritional Therapy is a complimentary therapy that can be used alongside medical treatment to support the body back to health. I strongly believe in holistic care. From gathering information through a detailed questionnaire before our meeting and listening to your story in the consultation gives me insight into your health history we will look at  your relationship with food, your lifestyle and what you have experienced physically and emotionally. I will also ask you to complete a short diet diary before we meet. We will explore where the problems may have stemmed from and how to support the body systems under stress. Not one diet suits all so tailoring a plan to suit your individual needs and goals are my priority.

The diet plan I create for you will be research based, use mainly whole foods and enjoyable. I will ask you to try new foods, but I am there to encourage and help you to make your own healthy choices. I believe all of us can create healthy food to help us flourish. Implementing change takes time and courage but I will help find ways around your challenges. In return I will expect you to persevere with making small changes. It may take a few months to see the results you want but often sooner!

During my training I learnt about Functional Medicine and I try to use this approach as much as possible. It is a growing field of Medicine that incorporates holistic and integrative care often with genetic studies (Example, how toxins in the environment may effect our genes). This is an area I wish to further my studies in.

I make no claim to diagnose or cure any illness. I may recommend further tests through your GP who I can write to with your permission or private testing.

The beauty of Nutritional Therapy is; it rarely has unpleasant side effects. I often recommend supplements, lifestyle activities such as more time in nature, yoga, swimming, joining a class or watching a good comedy! Laughter is therapeutic too!

Why I turned to Nutritional therapy?

At the age of 33 I was diagnosed with breast cancer. That was 18 years ago. I had a radical mastectomy and reconstruction followed by chemotherapy and radiotherapy. My children were very young, so I needed to do all I could to help myself. I researched as much as I could and met a lovely lady called Jill Swyers , a raw food expert trained at the Hippocrates Centre Florida. She educated me on the benefits of raw food and Wheatgrass. I vividly remember asking for tips on how to reduce my sugar intake and she gently replied, ‘try eating a red pepper’! This made me laugh but it stuck in my head that some foods are naturally sweet and can be used creatively to give delicious nourishing meals. Unfortunately, the cancer returned 5yrs later and I had more treatment. Looking back, I feel my body was crying out to me to look after myself more, so I decided to work part time and really focus on my health. I continued to research more on Nutrition and my passion for the subject grew. Now I really enjoy trying to motivate people towards better self-care through real food and simply being kinder to themselves.

How can I help you?

I offer a 20 minute free exploratory phone call, so you can tell me a summary of what you need help with. We can discuss your diet to work out how Nutritional Therapy may be of benefit to you. I can sometimes suggest other therapies or therapists that may suit your needs.

Weight management

I will work with you and support you to make small changes that gradually lay the foundations to better lifelong health.

Hormonal health

To be have happy hormones we need to have the right ingredients to produce them. Eating the right foods that suit you will help balance these chemical messengers promoting better energy, sleep and harmony in the body. I am all about including more variety to achieve this rather than making hard restrictions.

Digestive health

I can work with you by taking a detailed health history and your family history. Together with your diet diary may give some clues to underlying problems.

Mental health

More research is emerging linking diet with Mental health problems. Poor dietary intake can result in nutritional deficiencies. This together with genetic predisposition & lifestyle can be a driver for depression, anxiety etc. I can help by educating on food choices and meal planning to improve mood, sleep & mental wellbeing.

I’m so happy

“I called Siobhan about my nutrition and eating habits. She has helped me understand the way food affects you physically and mentally and I have discovered some food intolerances too. I now have a better understanding about what food my body requires and not what my sweet tooth wants. I would recommend Siobhan to anyone”
